Frequently asked questions

Which phones does Cairn work on?

Cairn is an Android app. An iPhone version isn't available yet.

Will it drain my battery?

Cairn shares on a steady schedule rather than constantly: every 30 seconds while the app is open, and every 2 minutes in the background. When your battery is low and not charging, background sharing slows down (every 5 minutes below 35%, every 10 minutes below 15%) and the notification says battery saver is on. Background sharing is off unless you turn it on.

What happens if I lose my phone?

Your identity is a key that lives on your phone. In the app, open Backup & restore to save your 24-word recovery phrase somewhere safe; entering it on a new phone brings your identity back. We can't recover it for you, because we never have your keys. Without the phrase you'd start fresh and pair with people again.

Can CappyLabs see where I am?

No. Your location is encrypted on your phone and can only be read by the people you've paired with. The server passes it along without being able to read it. Here's exactly what the server can and can't see.

How do I stop sharing with someone?

Tap them on the map or in your people list. Set sharing to Paused to stop for now, or remove them to disconnect completely. Either way, they stop seeing your location straight away.

I think someone is tracking me with Cairn. What can I do?

Open Cairn and check your people list: it shows everyone who can see your location. Remove anyone you don't recognise or no longer want to share with. If Share in the background is on, a notification is always showing; turn it off in the sharing settings. If you're in danger, call 999.

How do I delete my data?

In the app: menu (⋮) → Backup & restore → Delete this identity. It's immediate. You can also ask us to delete it.

Can I run my own server?

Yes. Cairn's code is public. Set up a server with Docker using the instructions in the Cairn repository, then in the app go to Settings → Server address.
